The much-anticipated NewJeans anniversary event in Gwangju was abruptly canceled due to copyright complaints. The event, organized by Gwangju’s Dong District Office, was set to celebrate the two-year anniversary of the popular K-pop girl group NewJeans at a newly opened K-pop Cafe. The event was scheduled to run from July 19 to 22 and had already sold 240 tickets.
However, NewJeans’ agency, ADOR, filed a complaint against the district office, accusing it of using the group’s intellectual property without permission for commercial purposes. ADOR argued that the district office, as a public institution, should not exploit the artists’ work without proper authorization.
The K-pop Cafe had planned to offer fans various NewJeans-themed items like albums, posters, and postcards, along with opportunities to take photos and receive gifts. The event aimed to draw K-pop fans to Chungjang-ro to boost the local economy.
An official from the Dong District Office admitted to mishandling the copyright issues and promised to prevent similar problems in the future. Despite the cancellation, fans remain hopeful for future events celebrating their favorite group.
