K-pop girl group (G)I-DLE is in hot water over their latest performance of the single “Klaxon.” The controversy erupted after the members appeared on KBS2TV’s Music Bank on July 19, wearing lifeguard-themed outfits adorned with the Red Cross emblem. This symbol is legally protected under South Korean law, and its unauthorized use can lead to significant penalties.
The Korean Red Cross has taken notice and plans to send a formal warning to (G)I-DLE’s agency, CUBE Entertainment. According to the Korean Red Cross Act’s Article 25, the emblem’s misuse, even if unintentional, is prohibited. The humanitarian organization has stated that they believe the misuse was due to ignorance rather than intentional wrongdoing.
Despite the backlash, no fines or penalties will be imposed on CUBE Entertainment, as the violation was deemed unintentional. However, the agency must submit a plan to prevent future occurrences.
(G)I-DLE’s performance was meant to evoke a summery lifeguard theme, complete with whistles, hats, and red bags. While the intention was to match the vibe of their new song, the inclusion of the Red Cross symbol has sparked significant criticism from netizens and legal authorities alike.
